Educational Information
Mississippi Sound recreates the coastal barrier island ecosystem that protects Mississippi's shoreline. The exhibit features loggerhead sea turtles, stingrays, and native Gulf fish in a large saltwater gallery with underwater viewing panels.
Mississippi's barrier islands were severely impacted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and continue to face threats from erosion, sea level rise, and coastal development. The exhibit highlights the importance of these islands as habitat for nesting sea turtles and migratory shorebirds.
