Educational Information

The Mexican Gray Wolf Exhibit houses one of the most critically endangered mammals in North America. ABQ BioPark participates in the Mexican Gray Wolf Species Survival Plan, which has brought this subspecies back from the brink of extinction through captive breeding and reintroduction into the wild in New Mexico and Arizona.

Mexican gray wolves were nearly eliminated from the wild by the 1970s, with only seven remaining individuals captured to establish a breeding program. Today, thanks to facilities like ABQ BioPark, over 240 wolves roam free in the American Southwest — one of conservation's most remarkable recovery stories.
