Birmingham Zoo is the largest zoo in Alabama, spanning 122 acres and home to over 550 animals representing more than 180 species. Located in the heart of Birmingham, the zoo has been a cornerstone of the community since 1955 and is nationally recognized for its red panda conservation program and commitment to Alabama wildlife education.

The zoo features the Trails of Africa exhibit with elephants, rhinos, and lions, a popular sea lion show, and the Hugh Kaul Bamboo Trail — a nature boardwalk through native Alabama forest habitat. The Junior Zoo area provides hands-on animal encounters for young visitors.

Birmingham Zoo holds AZA accreditation and supports conservation programs both locally and internationally, with particular emphasis on red panda and elephant conservation.
