Educational Information

Realm of the Tiger is the zoo's flagship exhibit, housing Sumatran tigers in a lush, densely vegetated habitat with a stream, waterfall, and swimming pool. The exhibit's multi-level design provides visitors with elevated and ground-level viewing while giving the tigers diverse terrain for climbing, swimming, and stalking.

Sumatran tigers are the most critically endangered tiger subspecies, with fewer than 400 remaining on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Illegal logging, palm oil plantations, and poaching are driving them toward extinction. BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo participates in the AZA Species Survival Plan and funds anti-poaching programs in Sumatra.
