Educational Information

Cat Country houses big cats from around the world in naturalistic habitats with elevated resting platforms, water features, and dense vegetation. Sumatran tigers, lions, and other feline predators are showcased with interpretive displays explaining their hunting adaptations and the conservation threats they face.

Sumatran tigers are critically endangered with fewer than 400 remaining in the wild, found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Deforestation for palm oil plantations and illegal poaching are the primary threats. Memphis Zoo supports Sumatran tiger conservation through the AZA Species Survival Plan.
