Educational Information

The Hippo Habitat features a 100,000-gallon pool where guests can observe common hippopotamuses both above and below the waterline through floor-to-ceiling glass viewing panels. The habitat recreates the river environments of sub-Saharan Africa.

Common hippopotamus populations have declined significantly due to habitat loss, hunting for meat and ivory tusks, and political instability throughout their range. Dallas Zoo supports hippo conservation programs in West Africa.
