Educational Information

Red Panda Passage offers intimate views of red pandas in a bamboo-rich habitat with elevated walkways and climbing structures. These charming, cat-sized mammals are more closely related to raccoons than to giant pandas, despite sharing their bamboo diet and name.

Red pandas are endangered with fewer than 10,000 remaining in the wild in the temperate forests of the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. Deforestation, bamboo die-offs, and poaching threaten their survival. Chattanooga Zoo has successfully bred red pandas as part of the AZA Species Survival Plan.
