Educational Information

Safari Walk features scimitar-horned oryx, zebras, and other hoofstock in open paddocks along a winding pathway. The oryx — declared extinct in the wild in 2000 — represent one of conservation's most remarkable stories, as captive breeding programs have maintained the species and enabled reintroduction efforts in Chad and Tunisia.

Scimitar-horned oryx were once abundant across North Africa's Sahel region but were hunted to extinction in the wild by 2000. Thanks to captive breeding at zoos and private facilities, over 1,000 oryx have been released back into the wild in Chad since 2016, making it one of the most successful reintroduction programs in history.
