Freshwater Gallery

The Freshwater Gallery follows the Cape Fear River from its headwaters in the Piedmont through coastal swamps to the estuary, showcasing American alligators, native turtles, and freshwater fish. The exhibits highlight the diverse aquatic habitats found within North Carolina's river systems.

The Cape Fear River basin drains over 9,000 square miles across central and southeastern North Carolina. Freshwater habitats face threats from pollution, development, and invasive species, making conservation of these waterways essential for both wildlife and the millions of people who depend on them for drinking water.
