African Plains

African Plains features African elephants, giraffes, zebras, and ostriches in a multi-acre savanna habitat with mixed-species yards and elevated viewing platforms. The exhibit recreates the open grasslands of East Africa, allowing visitors to observe the complex social dynamics of Africa's most iconic megafauna.

African elephant populations have declined by over 60% in the past century due to poaching for ivory and habitat loss. Riverbanks Zoo participates in the AZA Species Survival Plan for African elephants and supports field conservation projects across the continent through partnerships with conservation organizations.
