Horseshoe crabs are living fossils virtually unchanged for over 450 million years. Their blue copper-based blood contains Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), used by the pharmaceutical industry to test medical equipment for bacterial contamination — making these ancient animals essential to modern human medicine.
