Fox Pen Cypress Swamp

Fox Pen Cypress Swamp is a boardwalk trail through a blackwater cypress swamp on the Brookgreen property, offering visitors an immersive experience in one of the Lowcountry's most distinctive ecosystems. Ancient bald cypress trees, Spanish moss, and native wildlife create an atmosphere of wild beauty just steps from the sculpture gardens.

Cypress swamps were once extensive across the Southeastern Coastal Plain but have been significantly reduced by logging and development. These wetlands provide critical habitat for wildlife, filter pollutants, store floodwaters, and sequester carbon, making their preservation increasingly important for both ecological and climate reasons.
