Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in Gulf Shores is affectionately known as ‘The Little Zoo That Could’ after its remarkable survival and rebuilding following the devastation of Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The zoo’s animals were evacuated to staff members’ homes during the hurricane, and the facility was rebuilt with overwhelming community support.
The zoo relocated to a new, larger facility in 2019, dramatically expanding its animal collection and exhibit quality. The new campus features modern habitats for lions, primates, alligators, and a variety of other species, along with interactive animal encounters and educational programs focused on Gulf Coast wildlife conservation.
Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo holds ZAA accreditation and serves as an important conservation education resource for the Gulf Shores community and millions of annual beach vacationers.
