Educational Information

The African Savanna features African painted dogs (also known as African wild dogs), ring-tailed lemurs, and other African species in naturalistic habitats. African painted dogs are among the most endangered carnivores on the continent, with fewer than 6,000 remaining in the wild.

African painted dogs live in cooperative packs with complex social structures, hunting cooperatively with a success rate higher than any other African predator. Habitat fragmentation, conflict with livestock farmers, and disease from domestic dogs are driving their decline. Alexandria Zoo participates in the AZA Species Survival Plan for this charismatic species.
