Louisiana Habitat

The Louisiana Habitat showcases native wildlife of the state, including Louisiana black bears, bobcats, bald eagles, and native reptiles in naturalistic settings that replicate the pine forests, swamps, and bottomland hardwoods of central Louisiana. The exhibit is a centerpiece of the zoo's conservation education mission.

The Louisiana black bear — the state mammal of Louisiana — was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act due to habitat loss from logging and agricultural conversion. Thanks to conservation efforts including habitat restoration and breeding programs at facilities like Alexandria Zoo, the species has made a remarkable recovery.
