Educational Information

The Great Maya Reef is a 400,000-gallon walk-through tunnel exhibit that recreates the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. Sharks, rays, sea turtles, and thousands of tropical fish swim overhead as visitors pass through a 30-foot acrylic tunnel surrounded by Caribbean marine life.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef stretches over 600 miles along the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. It is the second-largest reef system in the world and faces severe threats from coastal development, overfishing, and ocean warming. The exhibit raises awareness about reef conservation across the Caribbean.
