Educational Information

The Raptor Aviary houses bald eagles, hawks, and owls in large flight enclosures among the live oaks of Brookgreen Gardens. These birds of prey serve as ambassadors for their wild counterparts, many of which nest on the 9,127-acre Brookgreen property and the surrounding Lowcountry landscape.

Bald eagles have made a remarkable recovery in South Carolina after near-extinction from DDT pesticide contamination. Today, hundreds of nesting pairs breed across the state, and the Brookgreen property itself supports nesting bald eagles — a testament to the environmental quality of this protected landscape.
