Educational Information

The Primate Building houses orangutans and other primates in enriched indoor and outdoor habitats designed to encourage natural behaviors including climbing, foraging, and tool use. Orangutans are among the most intelligent animals on Earth, and the exhibit showcases their remarkable problem-solving abilities and gentle social nature.

Orangutans are critically endangered, found only on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra where palm oil plantations are destroying their rainforest habitat at an alarming rate. An estimated 100,000 orangutans have been lost in the past 16 years. The exhibit educates visitors about sustainable palm oil and how consumer choices can help protect orangutans.
