Educational Information

The South American Exhibit houses capybaras, sloths, and other Neotropical species in naturalistic habitats. Capybaras — the world's largest rodents — are a visitor favorite, lounging in their pool and grazing on grass in a habitat that replicates the wetlands of their native South America.

Two-toed sloths have become one of the zoo's most popular attractions through interactive sloth encounter programs. Despite their reputation for laziness, sloths are remarkable animals with specialized metabolisms that allow them to survive on a nutrient-poor diet of leaves. The exhibit educates visitors about the rainforest ecosystems that sloths depend on.
