The CHINA exhibit was one of the premier panda habitats in the Western Hemisphere, housing giant pandas on loan from China until their return in 2023. The exhibit continues to showcase other Asian species and serves as a tribute to the zoo's historic panda program and its contributions to panda research and conservation.
Giant pandas were once on the brink of extinction but have been downlisted to Vulnerable thanks to decades of conservation efforts by China and international partners. Memphis Zoo's panda program contributed valuable research data on panda behavior, nutrition, and reproduction during the animals' two-decade residence.
