Educational Information
The Graveyard of the Atlantic is a 285,000-gallon shark tank featuring sand tiger sharks, sea turtles, and large fish swimming through a recreation of shipwreck debris on the ocean floor. The exhibit references the thousands of vessels that have wrecked off the treacherous Outer Banks, which create natural reef habitat for marine life.
Sand tiger sharks are the most commonly exhibited large shark species in aquariums due to their impressive appearance and relatively calm temperament. Despite their fearsome look, they are not aggressive toward humans. Their populations have declined significantly from fishing pressure, and they are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
