North Carolina Zoo

North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro is one of the largest natural habitat zoos in the world, spanning 2,600 acres with 500 acres open to the public. The state-supported zoo features two major regions — Africa and North America — where animals roam expansive habitats that replicate their native ecosystems with minimal visible barriers.

Home to more than 1,800 animals representing over 250 species, the zoo’s philosophy centers on showcasing animals in environments that closely mirror their wild habitats. The Africa region features elephants, gorillas, lions, and chimpanzees, while the North America region highlights bears, elk, bison, and native Appalachian wildlife.

North Carolina Zoo holds AZA accreditation and is the world’s largest natural habitat zoo, setting the standard for immersive, naturalistic animal exhibits.
