Educational Information
Penguin Encounter houses the only colony of emperor penguins in a zoological facility outside Antarctica, along with king penguins, Adélie penguins, and other species in a climate-controlled habitat that maintains near-Antarctic conditions year-round.
Emperor penguins are the largest of all penguin species, standing nearly four feet tall and surviving the harshest conditions on Earth. Climate change threatens their Antarctic breeding grounds as warming temperatures reduce the sea ice they depend on for nesting.
