Shedd Aquarium in Chicago is one of the world’s largest and most renowned indoor aquariums, housing over 32,000 animals representing 1,500 species. Opened in 1930 and designated a National Historic Landmark, Shedd was the first inland aquarium to maintain a permanent saltwater collection, shipped by rail from the ocean.

The Abbott Oceanarium is Shedd’s crown jewel — a 3-million-gallon Pacific Northwest marine habitat home to beluga whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins, sea otters, and penguins. The Caribbean Reef exhibit features a 90,000-gallon circular tank with a diver who hand-feeds fish and narrates via underwater microphone. Wild Reef recreates a Philippine coral reef with live sharks and a floor-to-ceiling viewing window.

Shedd Aquarium holds AZA accreditation, AMMPA accreditation, and American Humane Certified status, reflecting its position as one of the world’s premier aquatic institutions.
