Educational Information
White Oak's Okapi Exhibit houses these rare forest giraffes in habitats designed to replicate the dense Ituri Forest of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Okapi are notoriously difficult to breed in captivity, making White Oak's success especially valuable for species conservation.
Okapi were unknown to Western science until 1901 and remain elusive in the wild. Fewer than 25,000 remain, threatened by deforestation, mining, and armed conflict in their range.
